Also the demolishing of many of places of prayer those are located inside the buildings of ministries, associations, sports clubs, civilian police centers, and other civilian institutions that the Israeli forces had bombed and destroyed.
“Friends of humanity” has condemned the Israeli attacks against the civilians and houses of worship, considering that the targeting of mosques and other civilian institutions from the occupation forces is a big violation for the sanctity of mosques, houses of worship, and civilian institutions, and said that “It is not strange to the occupation forces who are committing war crimes against the Palestinian people on daily basis, by using its warplanes and heavy weapons to target children, women, elderly, and safe houses in its war against the Palestinians”.
The human rights organization added “What the occupation is doing today is fully compatible with what his militia has done in the Palestinian territories inside the green line in the forties of the last century when it has demolished thousands of mosques and places of worship, and such operations are very similar to the acts of the rogue Serbian militia during its war against the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the nineties of the last century and the demolishing of houses of worship there”.
The organization said that “the claims of the occupation regarding the existence of members from the Palestinian resistance inside the mosques are flimsy and clarifying that, who are resorting to mosques are women, children and the elderly whose houses were bombed by occupation”.
Also the organization has called for the protection of mosques, houses of worship and sanctities. And the necessity for supporting the Palestinian people and standing beside them in its confrontation against the occupation aggression, and emphasizes on the right of the Palestinian people in exercising their natural right of worship.
Friends of Humanity international said in its report that it views the Israeli military operations against the civilians and civilian institutions in Gaza Strip with a great concern stressing that these deliberate crimes are war crimes resulted from the Israeli war against the occupied Palestinian territories and reflects contempt of those forces to lives of Palestinian civilians and their holy places, considering them as reprisal operations and unjust punishment against the Palestinians and are contradicting with the article number 33 in the 4th Geneva Convention of 1949 regarding the protection of civilian persons during the war time.
The human rights organization emphasized that Israel is bearing the complete responsibility for the Palestinian civilians in all conditions and situations, according to the rules of the international law that the presence of an armed resistance do not justify in any way the usage of that excessive force.
Also the organization warned from the killing and injuring of more victims from the Palestinian civilians and the additional targeting of houses of worship and other civilian places.
Also Friends of Humanity “called all peoples of living consciences to do effective and hard work aiming to stop these crimes. And renew its demands to the contracting parties to the 4th Geneva Convention to fulfill their obligations contained in the first article in the convention in which they are committed to respect the convention in all cases, also respecting the obligations in the article 146 of the convention by the prosecution of the defendants accused of committing big breaches in the convention, noting that these violations are considered war crimes according the article 147 of the 4th Geneva Convention for the protection of the civilians, and according to the 1st additional protocol of the convention to ensure the right of protection for Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories”, as it has confirmed.

A wounded Palestinian woman is brought into an already overcrowded hospital during the Israeli offensive in Gaza City. The majority of Gazans are women and children.
WHO today announced that Israel has targeted 3 palestinian hospitals which are Al Wafa and Al Fata Hospitals, and the Al Quds which is run by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.
Like it wasnt enough for Israel to attack UNRWA schools twice but Israel is now targeting hospitals directly.
WHO also expressed its deep concern about the serious implications on patients, medical staff, health infrastructure and the provision of critical health services.
Over 1,066 Palestinians — including at least 311 children and 97 women — have been killed and 4,700 have been wounded since Israel launched its offensive against the Palestinian territory on December 27.
Hamas, the democratically-elected ruler of the coastal sliver, demands a cessation of an 18-month Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip before its fighters suspend the rocket attacks.

]]>(Jerusalem, January 16, 2009) - Israel’s use of heavy artillery in residential areas of Gaza City violates the prohibition under the laws of war against indiscriminate attacks and should be stopped immediately, Human Rights Watch said today. A Human Rights Watch researcher on the Israel-Gaza border on January 15, 2009, observed Israel’s repeated use in the center of Gaza City of 155mm artillery shells, which inflict blast and fragmentation damage up to 300 meters away.

Israel uses heavy artilary directly on civilian buildings!
“Firing 155mm shells into the center of Gaza City, whatever the target, will likely cause horrific civilian casualties,” said Marc Garlasco, senior military analyst at Human Rights Watch. “By using this weapon in such circumstances, Israel is committing indiscriminate attacks in violation of the laws of war.”
According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Israel yesterday shelled the relief organization’s main compound in Gaza City, wounding three people. UNRWA believes that white phosphorus used in the attack set part of the compound on fire. Up to 700 city residents had fled there in the morning to seek refuge after intense fighting in the area. The Human Rights Watch researcher also witnessed ground-burst 155mm white phosphorus strikes in Gaza City.
“We warned the Israelis hour by hour through the night of the vulnerabilities here as the shells came closer and closer, and shrapnel was coming into the compound on a regular occasion,” John Ging, UNWRA’s Gaza director of operations, told the media. “Nonetheless, we have now been subjected to these direct hits.”
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert apologized for the attack, but said Israeli forces had come under fire from the UN compound. “It is absolutely true that we were attacked from that place, but the consequences are very sad and we apologize for it,” he said.
The death toll from yesterday’s military operations remains unknown, but media reports quoted Gaza health officials as saying that 70 people had died (the reports make no distinction between civilian and combatant casualties). As of January 14, 1,013 Palestinians had died, including 322 children and 76 women, according to the Gazan Ministry of Health. An additional 4,560 Palestinians reportedly have been wounded, including 1,600 children and 678 women.
The attacks on Gaza City occurred after the Israel Defense Force (IDF) had warned Gaza’s residents to flee to city centers. According to the Israeli government, on January 3, the IDF began broadcasting warnings that told people, among other things, that “For your own safety, you are required to leave your homes immediately and move to the city centers.” Despite these warnings, the IDF has launched attacks against the Gaza city center, causing civilian casualties.
“Israel warned civilians to go to city centers and later shelled the center of Gaza City with a weapon that should never be used in densely populated areas,” Garlasco said.
According to media reports and aid groups, Israeli forces yesterday also fired upon a hospital and an international media center. The World Health Organization (WHO) told Human Rights Watch that Israeli shells had struck the al-Quds hospital in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, setting it on fire. The fire was extinguished, but about 100 patients had to be evacuated. Between 150 and 500 patients were in the hospital at the time, WHO said.
Israeli fire also hit the al-Shurouq tower, which houses media outlets such as Reuters, al-Arabiyya Television, and al-Hayat newspaper, causing substantial damage and wounding at least two journalists, including one who worked for the Abu Dhabi television channel. Media organizations had provided the Israeli military with the GPS locations of all their offices. Israeli forces told the media that they had come under fire from the building. It is not clear if Israeli forces hit the building using artillery or tank shells.
Human Rights Watch is unable to conduct full investigations into alleged laws of war violations by either side because of Israel’s continuing denial of access to Gaza.
Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups have also violated the laws of war by continuing to fire unguided Qassam and Grad rockets at population centers in Israel. A Human Rights Watch researcher on the Gazan border yesterday saw the firing of a Qassam rocket that hit outside Sderot, causing no injuries. Such rockets have killed three Israeli civilians and injured at least 78 since December 27.
International humanitarian law, or the laws of war, prohibits indiscriminate attacks. Indiscriminate attacks are of a nature to strike military objectives and civilians or civilian objects without distinction. Examples of indiscriminate attacks are those that are not directed at a specific military objective or that use weapons that cannot be directed at a specific military objective. Prohibited indiscriminate attacks include area bombardment, which are attacks by artillery or other means that treat as a single military objective a number of clearly separated and distinct military objectives located in an area containing a concentration of civilians and civilian objects.
The expected lethal radius for a 155mm high explosive projectile, such as the artillery the IDF is currently using in Gaza City, is reportedly between 50 and 150 meters and the expected casualty radius is between 100 and 300 meters. IDF officials have previously said that the error radius for a 155mm shell is usually 25 meters. Therefore, if the IDF fires shells as close as 100 meters to populated areas, it greatly increases the likelihood of civilian casualties.
In Human Rights Watch’s June 2007 report “Indiscriminate Fire: Palestinian Rocket Attacks on Israel and Israeli Artillery Shelling in the Gaza Strip,” Human Rights Watch made the following recommendations to Israel concerning the use of artillery in densely populated areas of Gaza. Human Rights Watch called upon Israel to:

Rampant diarrhea is spreading like a virus through the crowded territory because much of the water supply is polluted, and drinking water is hard to come by, the group said.
“She has been suffering from diarrhea for over a week,” Ali Al-Hour, 29, said Friday as he tended to his 2-year-old daughter, Fatima, in the Neusarat refugee camp. “We have begun boiling the water to be mixed with milk for her.”
The despondent dad’s words were echoed across the territory, where 1.4 million Palestinians live cheek by jowl, 56% of them children.
“The doctors told me not to allow the children to drink water from the tap,” said Muhammad Abu Eisheh, 37, as he searched in vain through the Neusarat camp for water for his three thirsty children.
Polio, measles and hepatitis are also threatening trapped Palestinian children because doctors have stopped vaccinating kids, health officials warned.
The WHO was in the midst of a mass vaccination program when the bombing began on Dec. 27. Now a health crisis is about to explode.
“If vaccinations are stopped for one or two weeks, this is enough to cause a widespread outbreak of avoidable diseases,” said Mahmoud Daher, WHO’s health officer in Gaza. “Efforts have been made for 15 years here to stop these diseases.”
Adding to Gaza’s woes, Israeli bombs damaged its already inadequate sewage system, and there are dozens of buried bodies rotting under the rubble, creating a stifling stench.
“The breakdown of the water and sewage systems can increase the risk of diarrhea and other viral diseases, particularly among children,” Daher said.
